About this place
Generously sliced fish and substantial nigiri at accessible prices make Sushikō in Tabata an enduring local draw. Handcrafted with practiced ease across the counter, the selections span classics like tuna, flounder, and gizzard shad to mantis shrimp and tender simmered conger eel, each prepared to highlight the natural character of the catch. The balance between the gently yielding sushi rice and thick cuts embodies the unpretentious warmth of a traditional neighborhood sushi joint, inviting diners to savor each piece at their own pace.
The menu features the deluxe Tokujō Sushi set—lavishly laden with tuna, sea urchin, herring roe, tamagoyaki, and rolled sushi—as well as satisfying meals served with fish-bone soup (arajiru) or miso soup. À la carte ordering offers just as much variety, ranging from shellfish such as ark shell, cockle, and mirugai to rolled favorites like tekka-maki and kappa-maki. Beyond nigiri, lingering over a sashimi platter or grilled fish with a cold beer or sake, finished off with a warm bowl of soup, is one of the house's distinct pleasures.
The interior combines counter seats with raised tatami seating, creating a cozy and comfortable room shaped by the hospitable presence of the chef and his wife. Alongside evening dinners, the restaurant opens from 12:00 on Sundays. Because seating is limited, reserving in advance is advised.
